Hello,
We write fantasy books—wild tales packed with adventures, featuring bold characters who wield dangerous weapons in worlds that seem to have nothing to do with our own. Or do they?
I'm not sure that everything comes straight out of our imaginations. Aidan and I speak almost daily. The goal is to connect on the progress of "The Book" (as in, the current project). However, we are both scatter-brained conversationalists and rarely manage to stick to the topic of "what comes next".
We try. But we flit from one idea to another. One day it’s a discussion of politics that shifts to geopolitics as we attempt to understand how countries interact with each other. The next it’s a film we loved—or hated—then a spiral into music, or ethics— religion— history— myth— science— technology— power— education— propaganda— architecture— social class— warfare— language— or the strange ways people justify the things they do. Sometimes it’s philosophy. Sometimes it’s absurdity. Sometimes it’s just a question that won’t let go.
And sooner or later, something from those conversations finds its way into our books.
I guess you could say we’re writing fantasy grounded in reality—just wearing better armour. What do you think? Have you noticed any connections to the real world in our stories?
Happy reading.
Warm regards,
Paula Baker and Aidan Davies
